I haven’t been caving since I was a youngster. At 6′ 4″ and moderately claustrophobic, that’s probably a good thing. Nevertheless, I’m still fascinated by what lies beneath the surface, so to help make up for missed adventures, this week’s Friday Night at the Movies presents a double-feature.

In our first video, Hazel Barton, Ph.D., from Northern Kentucky University, introduces us to a microbial world where the sunlight upon which we depend is nonexistent — a world where a surprising diversity of microorganisms have found ways to work together to sustain one another.

Our second video begins with life in caves and move on to even more extreme environments. posing questions about the possibilities of life elsewhere in the universe.

Enjoy.
