Earth Hour 2009: Saturday, March 31
8:30-9:30 p.m. Local Time

Step Forward
The achievement of Earth Hour 2009 will not be the energy saved globally in an hour, but rather the visual demonstration of a worldwide mandate to address climate change. This Saturday, for the first time in history, people worldwide have the opportunity to vote with their light switch – hence, the Earth Hour 2009 banner: VOTE EARTH. Switching your lights off is a vote for Earth. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action. Each individual, business, and community can step forward to illustrate that we can make a positive impact on climate change, by working together for a common cause.

World leaders and politicians may finally recognize global solidarity for making climate change a top priority. The data of the Earth Hour election will be presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, December 2009.  This powerful assembly will establish official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol.  Perhaps Earth Hour’s 2009’s goal of one billion Votes for Earth will motivate world leaders to take decisive action against global warming.

Carter Roberts, head of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s largest conservation organization and Earth Hour sponsor, defines the global event’s intention to “make a statement about our commitment to solve the climate change problem and symbolize the commitment that people will make throughout the rest of the year.”

Earth Hour 2009, the largest environmental awareness event ever, has enlisted more than 1,500 cities and millions of people to participate worldwide.  City skylines will go dark from 8:30 to 9:30, this special night, as homes, businesses, government buildings, schools and major landmarks turn off non-essential lighting.

Cities to participate in Earth Hour 2009 include Amman, Atlanta, Auckland, Cape Town, Chicago, Copenhagen, Dallas, Dubai, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Las Vegas, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Manila, Mexico City, Moscow, Nashville, Oslo, Rome, San Francisco, Singapore, Sydney, Toronto, Warsaw and Washington DC.

Some of the world’s most iconic landmarks will turn their lights off in support of crucial action on climate change, including the Pyramids of Giza; the world’s tallest hotel, the Burj Dubai; the tallest free-standing structure in the Americas, Toronto’s CN Tower; Moscow’s Federation Tower; Auckland’s Sky Tower, the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere; Australia’s Sydney Opera House; the Washington DC’s National Cathedral, and New York City’s Empire State and Chrysler Buildings and the lights of Broadway!
