“There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We’re all crew.”
– Marshall McLuhan
The Earth Day movement that was forged by 20 million Americans 39 years ago will engage more than a billion people worldwide this April 22nd. The seeds that were planted in 1970 yielded the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air and Clean Water acts and fueled today’s global environmental movement.

On some level, it’s incomprehensible that our society is, or ever was, so far removed from the natural world that a day commemorating the Earth was necessary. Decades of Earth Days have slowly transformed and reconnected us. There is hope in witnessing the incremental evolution of people, corporations and governments moving toward an environmentally conscious and responsible consensus. We look forward to the day where a sense of environmental stewardship is, once again, as natural as the earth itself.
The tools and momentum are in place for a permanent transformation comprised of steps large and small, on international and personal levels. By harnessing this collective spirit of environmental consciousness we will actualize the essence of Earth Day.
We’ve celebrated Earth Day all Month. Let’s extend that mind-set into an Earth Year, and an Earth Decade, and so on.
Step Forward
